Summer! BBQs and Suncream

Hi Everyone,

Ready for summer! BBQs and suncream.

It seems to make everyone happy although I know some people who find the heat very difficult – if you get itchy or sore skin in the summer, try to stay in the shade.  We’ve all been sitting outside our office at lunchtimes to eat our lunch in the sun.  Our social media and drop-in topics are all around taking care over summer.

Lots of people get a sunburn in summer – it can really hurt and can cause damage to your skin which can lead to cancer, so we advise that you always wear sun cream or stay in the shade.  Wearing a hat can protect your scalp – and help you look cool too 🙂

I don’t know about you but when people tell me to take care I often think I don’t need to listen. Sometimes it’s just because I don’t like to be told what to do 🙂 sometimes it’s because I want to take my own risks and learn my own way and sometimes it’s because I think, ‘it won’t happen to me’.

A lot of people think like this.  I learned about why we should use sun cream the hard way – I laid out in the sun for hours and then later my skin was all burned – I couldn’t believe how sore it was. I wear sun cream all the time now :).  Now I always think – if I have the information about the risks, then I can make an informed decision.

The World Cup

Have you been enjoying the world cup football?  I’ve been watching loads of it –  I love football and the world cup always makes me feel summery. I love the skill of the players and all the supporters singing and dancing when their teams score. I also like all the face paint and the things that the fans wear.

I think my favourite so far was the Egyptian fans wearing pharaoh outfits, the Swiss fans wearing hats that looked like cheese or the Icelandic fans who wore Viking outfits  :).

A lot of people talk about drinking more alcohol when the world cup is on. People also drink more alcohol when the sun is shining.

Alcohol and sunshine can both cause dehydration so it’s a good idea to drink lots of water if you drink alcohol or you are out in the sun – and especially if you are doing both. Being dehydrated can feel horrible.

Signs of dehydration are:

  • feeling thirsty
  • dark yellow and strong smelling pee
  • feeling dizzy or lightheaded
  • feeling tired
  • dry mouth, lips and eyes
  • peeing little, and fewer than 4 times a day.

If you feel any of these symptoms make sure you drink some water.

Anyway, we hope that you have an amazing summer – lots of fun and fresh air. Remember that our Feel Goodgroups run over the summer – they are free, you can get fit and we have a selection of free food.
