Why Should You Book
Health opportunities Team have been providing quality training for those working with young people around sexual and emotional health for over 15 years throughout South East Edinburgh. Our workers have a great deal of experience to share working with the most vulnerable or hard-to-reach young people.
We have a strong reputation for working well with other organisations and sharing what we’ve found helps young people. This has resulted in us being involved in the delivery of key training courses such as Sexual Health and Relationship Education (SHARE), Mentors In Violence Prevention (MVP) and The City of Edinburgh Council Risking Taking Behaviour programme.
Our experienced, skilled staff can design tailor-made training to support the needs of your organisation. We can deliver training across Scotland and can travel to any area.
Our training courses use a combination of methods and approaches, such as small group work, group discussions and skills practice. All our courses are designed to be interactive and encourage workers to increase their knowledge, skills and confidence.
Are You Ready For Sex
One of our most popular training courses is the one day 'Are You Ready For Sex?' (AYRFS). The course aimed at professionals who are supporting young people to delay sexual activity until they are ready.
The popularity of our Are You Ready For Sex? leaflet for young people prompted the development of this training course and a manual for professionals working with young people around readiness for sex.
The training and manual have been designed to be used with young people in informal youth settings, however, use is not restricted to these settings and the programme can be tailored to suit specific needs e.g. Looked After young people.
This exciting one-day training programme aims to:
- Increase participants confidence to talk to young people about sexual health and relationships
- Provide participants with a ‘ready to use’ toolkit of practical activities and methods to encourage young people to delay sexual activity until they are ready
- Increase participants’ skills & knowledge to work with young people 1-1 or in group work settings around these issues
Participants are provided with the Are You Ready For Sex? manual - which contains 16 fun and participatory session plans and resources (that can be photocopied) covering issues such as readiness for sex, exploring risks and keeping safe, resisting pressure, internet safety and alcohol – and a small quantity of Are You Ready For Sex? leaflets.
This training is for anyone who works with young people and has some understanding of underage sexual activity in relation to child protection. The training and manual have been designed to be used with young people in informal youth settings, however, use is not restricted to these settings and the programme can be tailored to suit specific needs, e.g. Looked After young people. Previous participants have been youth workers, residential care officers, social workers, teachers, school nurses and drop-in staff.
£130 per participant
This cost includes a copy of the ‘Are You Ready For Sex?’ manual which contains over 16 fun session plans covering issues such as acceptable or unacceptable behaviour, resisting pressure, readiness for sex, internet safety, sexuality, alcohol; and a small quantity of ‘Are You Ready For Sex?’ leaflets.

Both the training programme and the resource facilitate exploration and enable participants, both professionals and young people to gain confidence either in the delivery of the sessions or decision making with regards to sexual health and wellbeing whilst at the same time having fun. This is a useful addition which complements other key resources that are used with young people on sexual and emotional health and really looks at helping young people to think about delaying sexual activity until they are ready.
