Farewell and New Beginnings For Caroline…

The time has come for me to say farewell and move on to a new job. After 14 ½ years at Health Opportunities Team (HOT), it’s time for a change and new challenges. I started working here in 2003 as a Sessional Worker and realised that I LOVED working with young people around their health and well-being. I became a Project Worker the following year and then a Senior Project Worker eight years later when this new role was developed. After an agency restructure in 2014, I was promoted to Deputy Manager.

What’s it been like working at HOT?

I have worked here for a long time, as I really believe in the work HOT does and enjoy working with young people in the field of health and well-being. I have been interested in health from a young age and believe in the importance of mental and emotional well-being as a foundation for a fulfilling life. Some of the reasons I have loved and valued working at HOT…

  • HOT’s ethos and values and approach for working with young people. We’re honest, warm, reliable, caring, open-minded and respectful. We listen and aim to boost confidence and self-esteem.
  • Lots of opportunities for my own development and growth.
  • HOT’s supportive and dedicated team, practising what we preach and bringing HOTs ethos and values into everything we do and how we are as a team…values of respect, dignity, celebrating diversity, supporting each other, taking responsibility and working together.

Every day at HOT is different (there’s no such thing as boredom here!) and with such a high need for our services, I’ve had lots of opportunities to develop ideas and approach things differently to help young people as much as possible.

What was challenging about working at HOT?

Without doubt, the biggest challenges have been around difficulties securing and sustaining funding and issues resulting from this. For example – when some people in the team lost their jobs or had their hours cut, having to reduce services for young people and juggling all the different demands of my role.

What have the highlights been?

  • Having the privilege of working with so many amazing, resilient and inspiring young people.
  • Making a difference in the lives of many young people.
  • Working with and learning so much from all my fantastic, knowledgeable and skilled colleagues and volunteers (every day really is a school day)
  • Having flexibility in my roles to develop, try new things and be creative.
  • Learning loads about the health and well-being and working with young people.
  • Partnership working with so many amazing professionals passionate about supporting young people.

My hopes for HOT…

That it continues to be a project of excellence, has to worry less about funding and it can grow to support more young people with their health and well-being for many more years to come.
